South Komodo is the park’s cold half: greener water, richer macro, Manta Alley and the muck-and-rubble sites around Horseshoe Bay. It runs best from roughly June to September, needs a 5 mm wetsuit, and is realistically a 6-day-plus itinerary because getting there costs a full day’s sailing each way.
Why the south is a different trip entirely
Almost every Komodo liveaboard you will be offered runs the north. It is closer to Labuan Bajo, warmer, clearer and easier to sell. The south is the park’s other half and it is sold as its own product by very few operators, which is odd, because for a certain kind of diver it is the better half.
The difference is water. Cold, nutrient-heavy upwelling pushes north from the Indian Ocean into the park’s southern bays. Temperatures commonly drop to 22–25°C and can go lower. Visibility falls to 8–15 m and turns green. In exchange you get biomass: soft coral in colours the north does not produce, crinoids, frogfish, pygmy seahorses, nudibranchs, rare rhinopias, and manta aggregations at Manta Alley that outnumber anything at the northern cleaning stations.
It is also further. From Labuan Bajo the southern bays are the far end of the park, which is why a 3D2N trip cannot include them honestly and why anyone selling you “north and south in three days” is selling you a lot of sailing.

The temperature reality check
People underestimate this and it ruins trips. In the north you dive comfortably in a 3 mm. In Horseshoe Bay, on a four-dive day, a 3 mm is not enough for most divers. Bring or rent a 5 mm, and add a hooded vest if you feel the cold. Being cold on dive two means you skip dives three and four, and you will have paid for a southern itinerary to sit on the deck.
The greener visibility is the same phenomenon from the other side: the nutrients that chill the water are what feed the invertebrate life. Photographers should plan for it — macro and close-focus wide-angle work here, big blue-water scenics generally do not.
Best months, and why the passage south is rougher
June to September is the southern window. That is when the water is at its most productive, manta activity at Manta Alley is generally strongest, and the visibility, while never northern-clear, is at its best.
The trade-off is the ride. The same south-east season that drives the upwelling also drives swell onto the park’s southern coast, which is exposed to open ocean. Passages between the central park and Horseshoe Bay can be genuinely uncomfortable, and southern anchorages are more weather-dependent than northern ones. Skippers will move or drop the southern leg if conditions warrant — and should.
Outside June to September the south is dived less often. December to March, under the north-west monsoon, most operators do not attempt it. The best-time guide covers how these windows interact across the whole park.
Manta Alley versus Manta Point
Both are manta sites; they are not interchangeable. Manta Point, or Karang Makassar, in the central park is a shallow 5–15 m rubble plateau with cleaning and feeding stations, a mild-to-moderate drift, and it is workable for intermediate divers and confident snorkellers with guide and tender support. Its most reliable window is generally around December to March.
Manta Alley in the south is deeper, surgier and colder, sits in a channel between rocks, and demands intermediate-to-advanced competence. Its peak tends to run June to September. When it is on, the numbers are the reason people fly across the world.
Both are operator-consensus patterns, not published datasets, and mantas do not read calendars. Park rules apply at both: a minimum approach distance, commonly cited as two metres, no touching, no feeding, no chasing, and no positioning yourself above an animal at a cleaning station.

Bands are indicative for 2027 planning and vary by vessel class and season. Fewer boats run south, so availability rather than price is usually the binding constraint.
Included and excluded
Included: cabin, all meals and snacks, water, tea and coffee, guided diving with tanks and weights, tenders, island landings, dive guides and crew, Labuan Bajo transfers.
Excluded: flights, Komodo National Park and ranger fees, harbour fee, diver surcharge, 5 mm wetsuit and equipment rental, nitrox, alcohol, courses, gratuities, insurance. Foreign-visitor park fees are published across 2025–2026 sources between IDR 150,000 and 250,000 per person per day depending on schedule and day of week, plus roughly IDR 25,000 per diver per day and a comparable harbour fee. Ask for the current figure in writing at booking.
Who should not book the south
- Divers who feel the cold. Four dives a day at 23°C in a borrowed 3 mm is misery, not diving.
- People prone to seasickness. The southern passage is the roughest water in the park.
- Wide-angle-only photographers. Green water and 10 m visibility will not deliver what you came for.
- Newly certified divers. Manta Alley’s surge and the southern swim-throughs are not a place to be building basic buoyancy. Build up in the north first — the north Komodo route is the natural starting point.
- Anyone on a 3D2N schedule. The sailing time makes it dishonest.

How cold is south Komodo?
Commonly 22–25°C in the southern bays, against 27–29°C in the north. A 5 mm is the sensible default, with a hood or vest if you chill easily.
When is the best time for Manta Alley?
Generally June to September, by operator consensus. Reef mantas are present in the park year-round, but the southern aggregations track the cool-season upwelling.
Can beginners dive the south?
Torpedo Alley and Cannibal Rock are approachable for a competent Open Water diver in calm conditions. Manta Alley and the Boulders are not beginner sites. Be honest with your guide about your experience.
Why is the visibility worse?
Because the water is full of the nutrients that produce the marine life you came to see. Green water and rich reefs are the same fact viewed twice.
How long does it take to sail south from Labuan Bajo?
Broadly a full day of repositioning each way, which is why 6D5N is the practical minimum and why 3-day trips do not include it.
Is the south good for snorkelling?
Less so. Cooler water, surge and depth make it a diver’s region. Snorkellers get more from the northern and central bays.
