How the 2027 season is structured
There is no closed season in Komodo National Park. What changes is the weather, and with it the mix of trips operators are willing to schedule.
From roughly April to November the south-east dry season delivers calmer seas and better visibility. This is when the long Bali–Labuan Bajo crossings are viable, when southern routes to Horseshoe Bay are attempted, and when the fleet runs at capacity. From December to March the north-west monsoon brings swell and rain squalls. Trips continue — short Labuan Bajo-based park itineraries run through it — but crossings become rare, southern legs largely stop, and smaller vessels take their annual maintenance in January and February.
That is the real shape of the calendar, and it is worth understanding before you fixate on a specific date.

Manta tendencies are operator consensus rather than published science: reef mantas are seen in Komodo almost year-round, with central Manta Point generally most reliable around December to March and southern Manta Alley often peaking June to September. Why January and February are thin, and what runs instead
Two reasons, and neither is a park closure. First, the north-west monsoon makes long open-water passages uncomfortable and southern anchorages exposed. Second, this is when a good part of the fleet goes to slipway for annual maintenance, hull work and certification renewal — which is exactly when you want it to happen.
What still runs: short 3D2N and 4D3N park itineraries from Labuan Bajo on the larger, more stable vessels, using sheltered northern and central anchorages. Manta Point is often at its most productive in these months. Prices are at their lowest and the park is at its quietest. One planning note that costs people trips: book your Denpasar–Labuan Bajo flight to arrive the day before departure, never the same morning. The sector takes about an hour to an hour and a quarter with several daily services in high season, but single-sector domestic flights are rescheduled often enough that a same-day arrival puts a week-long booking at risk.
Deposits, balances and weather changes in plain English
- Deposit is typically 25–30 percent to hold a cabin, higher for a full charter, and is usually non-refundable past a stated date.
- Balance is commonly due 60–90 days before departure.
- Weather changes are handled by rerouting, not cancelling: a sheltered anchorage substituted for an exposed one, a strait transit delayed for tide. This is normal seamanship and does not entitle anyone to a refund.
- Operator cancellation for genuine safety reasons should give you a rebooking or refund option. Get that clause in writing.
- Your cancellation follows a sliding scale. Travel insurance covering trip cancellation is the correct instrument here, not the operator’s goodwill.

What is included on a typical 2027 departure
Included: cabin, all meals and snacks, water, tea and coffee, guided dives or snorkelling with tanks and weights, tenders, island landings, crew and cruise director, Labuan Bajo transfers.
Excluded: flights, Komodo National Park and ranger fees, harbour fee, diver surcharge, equipment rental, nitrox, alcohol, courses, gratuities, insurance, visa. Park fees for foreign visitors are published across 2025–2026 sources between IDR 150,000 and 250,000 per person per day depending on which schedule applies, plus roughly IDR 25,000 per diver per day and a comparable Labuan Bajo harbour fee. These are revised periodically — ask for the figure applying to your dates to be stated on your invoice.

No. A 2022 proposal to charge around IDR 3.75 million — roughly USD 250 — as a Komodo “premium membership” was never implemented and has been reported as cancelled. The park reverted to standard daily tickets. The rumour survives across a great many travel pages.
Which month has the best visibility?

Can I book a crossing in December?
Rarely. Long Bali–Komodo passages are generally not scheduled in the monsoon. Private charter can attempt it if the weather cooperates, but expect the operator to advise against it, and take the advice.
