Most large Bali–Komodo liveaboards board at Benoa Harbour, about 30 minutes from Ngurah Rai Airport. Some traditional phinisi use Serangan, and fast catamarans typically leave from Padangbai in the east. Sanur and Amed are fast-boat hubs for Lombok and the Gilis — they are not liveaboard departure ports.
This is the detail that trips people up two days before departure, usually at the point where they have already booked a hotel in the wrong part of the island. Bali has several working harbours and they serve completely different types of vessel.
Which Bali port does a Komodo liveaboard leave from?
Benoa, in almost every case. Pelabuhan Benoa is Bali’s main deep-water passenger and cruise port, sitting on the neck of land between Sanur and Nusa Dua. It has the depth, the alongside berthing and the harbourmaster infrastructure that a 30–50 metre vessel needs, and it is the closest major port to the airport.
Serangan, just north of Benoa across the channel, is used by some larger phinisi. Padangbai, an hour and a half east, is the fast-catamaran hub — relevant if your “liveaboard” is actually a speed transfer to Lombok, not a Komodo sailing.

Why are Sanur and Amed not liveaboard ports?
Because neither has the water depth or the berthing for a vessel of that size. Sanur’s beach-launch jetty serves fast boats to Nusa Penida, Lembongan and the Gilis. Amed, on the north-east coast, is a dive village with shore entries and small local boats. Both appear constantly in search results for “boat from Bali”, which is exactly why travellers end up booking accommodation an hour and a half from their actual departure gate.
If a booking confirmation says Sanur or Amed for a multi-day Komodo sailing, query it before you do anything else. It is either a transfer point — you are being driven onward — or the trip is not what you think it is.
What does boarding day actually look like?
Boarding on a Bali-departure crossing is a slower, more administrative affair than the beach-hop boardings people are used to elsewhere in Indonesia. Benoa is a working commercial port with a gate.

Where should you stay the night before?
Anywhere in the southern triangle — Sanur, Nusa Dua, Jimbaran, Kuta or Seminyak — puts you within an hour of Benoa in ordinary conditions. Sanur is the quiet, sensible choice: close, calm, and full of the sort of restaurants you want the night before a passage rather than the night after one.
Ubud is the risk. It is beautiful and it is roughly 75–105 minutes from Benoa on a good day, considerably more if you hit the Sukawati or Sanur bypass at the wrong hour. If your itinerary starts and ends in Ubud, plan a hotel change for the final night.
The traffic buffer rule
Add ninety minutes to whatever Google Maps tells you, and treat the port gate time as your real deadline rather than the departure time. A boat that has filed a sailing clearance and timed a tidal gate will not wait indefinitely. Flying in on the morning of departure is the single most common way people miss a crossing — fly in the day before, always.
What if I am flying into Labuan Bajo instead?
Then none of this applies to you, and the logistics are simpler: Denpasar to Labuan Bajo is a flight of about an hour to an hour and fifteen minutes, with several departures daily in high season, and Komodo Airport sits roughly 10–15 minutes from the harbour. Fares are commonly quoted in the region of IDR 600,000–1,500,000 one way depending on season and lead time. Airlines and schedules change frequently, so book flexible fares where you can. How far is Benoa Harbour from Ngurah Rai Airport?
About 30 minutes in normal traffic, and it is the closest of Bali’s ports to the airport. Allow considerably more during the late-afternoon peak or on a public holiday.
Can I get to the port by myself, or must I use the operator transfer?
You can arrange your own driver, but your name has to be on the manifest for the port gate and the driver needs to know which pier. Operator transfers exist mostly to remove that variable — on a crossing where the tide sets the departure time, it is worth taking.
What time do Bali–Komodo liveaboards usually depart?
Typically mid to late afternoon, to make the exposed Lombok Strait leg overnight and reach the first anchorage in daylight. Exact times shift with the tide and are confirmed a few days before sailing.
Is there anywhere to store extra luggage during the trip?
Most operators can hold a bag in Bali, and many Bali hotels store luggage free between stays. Take soft bags on board — cabin storage on a phinisi is designed for duffels, not hard-shell suitcases.
Do I need my passport at the port?
Yes. Bring the physical passport, not a photo. Passenger manifests for commercial vessels are checked against ID at the gate, and the details are also used for the vessel’s clearance paperwork.
What happens if my flight is delayed and I miss boarding?
