For July and August 2027, book six to nine months out. Shoulder months need two to four. Last-minute booking is a real strategy but a narrow one — it works in January, February and the deep shoulder, and almost never in peak season. Book the boat first and the flights second, never the reverse.
Liveaboard capacity is fixed in a way hotel capacity is not. A boat with eight cabins has eight cabins, and when the good ones on a popular week are gone, they are gone. That single fact drives everything below.

One caveat on the “book early” advice: it applies to the cabin you want, not just to any cabin. Low midships cabins and the cheaper lower-deck tiers frequently sell before the expensive ones, because experienced repeat guests know they are the most comfortable on a passage. Does last-minute booking ever work?
Sometimes, and it is worth being honest about when. Late availability appears when a group cancels, when a charter falls through, or when a departure has one or two cabins left close to sailing and the operator would rather fill them than sail light.
That happens most in January, February, March and November — the quieter months — and rarely in July and August. To use it you need genuinely flexible dates, a tolerance for whichever cabin remains, and the ability to book flights at short notice, which frequently eats the saving.

How do deposits and balances work?
The standard structure across the industry is a deposit at booking to hold the cabin — commonly a percentage of the total — with the balance due some weeks before departure. What varies, and what you should read carefully, is what happens if plans change.
A fair cancellation policy generally has these features:
- A clear sliding scale tied to days before departure, published before you pay rather than produced afterwards.
- A stated position on date changes — many operators will transfer a deposit to another departure within a season, which is more valuable than a refund clause you will never use.
- An explicit weather and safety clause allowing the master to reroute or delay, paired with a defined remedy if the trip is materially shortened.

What should give you pause: no written policy at all, a demand for full payment months out with no protection, or a promise of a fixed, unchangeable itinerary in tidal water. That last one is not generosity — it is a sign the operator has not thought about how Komodo works.

Why book the boat before the flights?
Because the boat is the scarce item and the flight is not. Denpasar to Labuan Bajo has multiple daily departures in high season on a flight of about an hour to an hour and fifteen minutes, with fares commonly quoted around IDR 600,000–1,500,000 one way depending on season and lead time. There is almost always a seat.
Book flights first and you will find yourself trying to bend a boat schedule around them, which usually means either a worse departure date or two extra hotel nights. Book the boat first, then buy flights with a buffer day on each side — the day before because domestic delays happen, and the day after because your last dive has to respect the fly-after-dive interval anyway.

What about insurance?
Arrange it before you pay the balance, not after. Two components matter: trip cancellation cover that would actually return your deposit if you could not travel, and medical cover that explicitly includes recreational scuba diving, with chamber treatment and evacuation. Standard travel policies frequently exclude diving, or cover it only to a shallow depth limit that a Komodo itinerary will exceed.

How are group and charter timelines different?
Longer, and front-loaded. A full-boat charter for a dive club, a family group or a company usually needs 9 to 12 months for a peak-season week, because you are competing for the whole vessel rather than a cabin. Groups also need internal lead time — collecting deposits from twelve people takes longer than paying one yourself.
The usual sequence: hold a provisional date with the operator, confirm your minimum numbers, pay a group deposit, then release the remaining cabins or absorb them.
