April to November is the reliable window for Komodo liveaboards: calmer seas, better visibility, and the full range of sites accessible. Trips run year-round — the park does not close — but December to March brings the north-west monsoon, rougher exposed passages, and some smaller vessels choosing to pause. May, June, September and October are the sweet spots.
Komodo does not have a simple high and low season. It has a sea-state season, a visibility season, a manta season that moves between north and south, and a crowd season that peaks with European and Australian school holidays. They do not all line up.

Two notes on reading this table. Water temperatures in the south run cooler than the north through the middle of the year because of upwelling — a 3 mm suit that is fine at Castle Rock in July can be inadequate at Horseshoe Bay the same week. And visibility figures are typical ranges, not promises; a single day of rain and run-off changes them.
Does Komodo National Park close in the wet season?
No. This is a persistent myth and it costs travellers good, quiet, cheap trips. There is no park-wide seasonal shutdown.
What is true: individual operators, particularly those running smaller vessels, sometimes pause during the north-west monsoon peak in January and February, because the exposed passages become uncomfortable and dive-site access is less reliable. Some sites become weather-dependent. But the park operates, and boats sail.
Wet-season diving in Komodo is genuinely good if you can accept variable visibility and a bumpier ride. Central manta sites are often at their best. You will have Padar to yourself. Our dry versus rainy season comparison covers the trade in more detail.
Which are the best months for a first Komodo trip?
May. The seas have settled, visibility is climbing toward its annual best, both manta areas fish reasonably, and the July–August crowd has not arrived. If you are choosing one month blind, choose this one.
September. The southern manta season is still strong, conditions are excellent, and the peak-season boat traffic is thinning. Prices soften slightly from the August high.
October. Arguably the most balanced month of the year: settled water, good visibility, both manta areas viable, moderate crowds and moderate pricing.
July and August are excellent for conditions and southern mantas, but they are also the most expensive and the most crowded, and popular sites can have several boats on them at slack tide. That is not a reason to avoid them — just book early.

How does the crossing from Bali change the calculus?
It sharpens it. A Labuan Bajo-based 3D2N trip in a marginal month means a couple of bumpy transfers. A Bali–Komodo crossing in the same month means two overnight open-water passages. The seasonal comfort difference is therefore much larger on the crossing than on a park-only trip.

Is Komodo National Park closed in January and February?
No. There is no park-wide closure. Some operators pause during the monsoon peak and some sites become weather-dependent, but the park operates year-round.
How warm is the water in Komodo?
Typically 24–29 °C depending on month and area. Southern sites can be several degrees cooler than northern ones mid-year because of upwelling — pack more thermal protection than the average number suggests if your itinerary goes south.
When is visibility best in Komodo?
Generally April to November, with 20–30 m common through the middle of the dry season. Wet-season visibility is more variable and can drop after heavy rain.
Which month is cheapest for a Komodo liveaboard?
January and February, when demand is lowest and fewer boats are running. March and November are the value shoulder months with much better conditions.
Can I see Komodo dragons year-round?
Yes. Dragon trekking on Komodo and Rinca operates throughout the year with mandatory ranger escort. The dragons are less active in the hottest part of the day, so morning landings are standard regardless of season.
