Yes, a newly certified diver can have an outstanding week in Komodo — on the right sites, with a boat that grades honestly and splits groups by ability. The park’s green-graded reefs are genuinely world class. What a beginner should not do is talk their way onto Batu Bolong or Castle Rock because they were on the brochure.
Komodo’s reputation for ripping current is accurate and incomplete. The same park contains shallow, gentle, turtle-heavy coral gardens where an Open Water diver with twelve logged dives will have the best day of their diving life. Site selection is everything.

Look at that list again. Mantas, turtles in double figures, soft coral walls, macro. Nothing on it requires a negative entry or a reef hook. A beginner’s Komodo itinerary is not a consolation itinerary.
Which sites should you skip for now?
Until roughly 40 to 50 logged dives with genuine current experience: Batu Bolong, Castle Rock, Crystal Rock, The Cauldron and Shotgun, GPS Point at Banta, and Manta Alley in the south. These share three characteristics — strong or accelerating current, negative entries, and consequences for losing the group that are more than inconvenient.

This is not a permanent exclusion. It is a sequence. Many divers arrive with 15 logged dives, do six or seven easy park dives with attention to buoyancy, complete an Advanced course on board, and finish the same trip on a moderate drift site they could not have handled on day one.
Which skills matter most in current?
Buoyancy, and then buoyancy
Everything else is downstream of it. In moving water, a diver who is over-weighted and finning to stay off the reef burns gas fast, silts the site, and drifts out of formation. Get your weighting checked properly on the first dive and again after you change exposure protection. Ask for a weight check — a good guide offers it before you ask.
Horizontal trim
A diver in a vertical, seated posture presents a large surface to the flow and gets pushed. Flat and streamlined, you cut through it. This single change makes moderate current feel dramatically easier.
SMB deployment
On any drift site, the boat finds you by your marker. Practise deploying from a safety stop in easy conditions, with your own SMB and reel, before you need it on a real drift. If you cannot do it, that is a genuine reason to sit out a site — and a genuine reason to book a refresher.
Staying with the guide
Unglamorous and the most important. In current, the guide is reading the flow, the topography and the exits. Being ten metres behind the group is being in a different dive.

Why should you be honest on the experience form?
Because it is the mechanism that keeps you off the wrong site, and it works only if the number you write is real. Guides use logged dives, recency and self-reported comfort to split groups — and group splitting is the single most effective safety measure on a current-driven itinerary.
Two specific temptations to resist. Do not round 22 dives up to “about 40”. And do not omit that your last dive was three years ago; recency matters as much as total count. Nobody on a good boat thinks less of a diver for saying “I’m rusty, put me in the easy group” — and the guides quietly trust that diver more for the rest of the week.

What should a beginner look for when choosing a boat?
Three things. A published site plan that includes green-graded reefs, not just the headline pinnacles. A stated willingness to split groups by ability rather than running everyone on one profile. And guides in reasonable numbers — small groups matter more here than the size of the sun deck.

Can Open Water divers dive in Komodo?
Yes, on green-graded sites like Siaba Besar, Sebayur, Mawan, Pink Beach and Manta Point with a drift briefing. Advanced-only sites exist and should be respected, but they are a minority of what the park offers.
How many dives do I need before Komodo’s advanced sites?
Roughly 40–50 logged dives with real current experience is the usual benchmark for the pinnacles and channels. Comfort and recency matter as much as the number.
Can I do my Advanced course on the liveaboard?

Will I see mantas as a beginner?
Possibly — Manta Point is a shallow, mild-drift site suitable for confident Open Water divers and even snorkellers. Sightings are never guaranteed, but the park’s headline animal is not gated behind advanced certification.
Is it worth going to Komodo with only 10 dives?
Yes, with the right operator and honest expectations. You will dive a subset of the park, that subset is superb, and you will come back a considerably better diver than you arrived.
What if I get scared on a site?
Say so, before the dive if possible and by signal during it. Aborting a dive early is a normal, respected decision. Any guide who makes a diver feel foolish for calling it is the wrong guide.
